OVERFLOW

Notre-Dame Street represents one of the founding routes of the island of Montreal. Its presence in the borough of Lachine prompts us to question its historical place and identity in relation to the island's unique sector. Positioned between the city and the river, between industrial wasteland and residential renewal, Notre-Dame Street represents an opportunity to create a landmark destination. With the redevelopment of the street, we have the opportunity to endow the district with a unique retail experience based around a defining element of the territory: water. Through this landscape component, it will be possible to accentuate the identity of Lachine's cultural district, create a friendly, resilient pedestrian space for businesses while linking the entire area around a green infrastructure. This is the Notre-Dame overflow.

The overflow

Lachine's cultural district is characterized by its relationship with Lake Saint-Louis and the Lachine Canal. The proximity of these major components marks the landscape and identity, and confers a unique ambiance. The renewal of Notre-Dame aims to bring this atmosphere and the presence of water to the new commercial street. This relationship with water is being decompartmentalized to include it in the daily lives of the people who frequent Notre-Dame Street, and to create opportunities for encounters. This new theater of everyday life reinforces the cultural district and creates a unique, high-profile retail experience.

The street, the water and its levels

The existing street is replaced by a new shared street configuration, with a strong predominance of pedestrians and cyclists. The street level is raised to eliminate sidewalks and building thresholds. In this way, the space of Notre-Dame Street overflows to maximize its right-of-way and flexibility. Formal landscaping is deployed in front of buildings of heritage interest and at intersections. From west to east, fruit trees, conifers and large deciduous trees accompany the walker through the seasons. On this new carpet of gently sloping masonry, water features of varying depths flow to accompany visitors on their commercial wanderings. Sometimes the deep water marks a moment of coolness, and in places the historic facades are reflected in a fine water mirror that acts as a playground for children. The water appears and disappears according to the season and the program, creating a resilient setting with a strong sense of identity. Rue Notre-Dame is the stage for a renewed experience of water.

The runoff

The overflow of the shared street led us to extend the interventions beyond Notre-Dame Street. At the corner of 7th, 12th, 15th and 18th Streets, water features mark the neighborhood's north-south links with parks, the tramway and the emblematic Lachine riverbank. Along these links, new ecological street infrastructures drain runoff water into the canal. These small ecological canals serve as beacons, encouraging waterside walkers to detour towards Notre-Dame.

The overflow of Notre-Dame illustrates a powerful experience for a place steeped in history.
