CEPSUM in the Spotlight
Our proposal for the entrance to the CEPSUM is centered around the theme of clarity, both in a figurative sense, by offering a simple and intuitive usage for all, and in a literal sense, by creating a luminous space. Our objective is to offer a space accessible and attractive for all, without any visible separations between the experiences of users.
Indeed, one of the current challenges for the entrance to the CEPSUM is the presence of a multitude of entrances that are not always accessible, which can be confusing. Notably, accessing the reception through the elevator is marginalizing, as people with reduced mobility must follow a dark hallway, isolating them from other visitors.
To offer a more clear and inclusive experience, we propose a centralized access point at the front with a ramp as the focal element. This ramp is our play on the grand staircases which are often seen at the entrance of public buildings. After going up the ramp and entering the building, you walk through a vestibule followed by a lobby. By having one staircase instead of two, the lobby becomes more open and allows for a communal area at the floor level. In doing so, the way to the elevator is cleared and more inviting than the current winding hallway. While welcoming visitors, this space also guides them towards the circulation pathways that lead them to the reception desk on the floor above. The entrance to the metro is also more inclusive thanks to the addition of an escalator, an elevator, tactile paving, and wide windows; some of these are frosted, so the light is not too blinding. To harmonize our project with the current infrastructure, we used the same color accents, like with the blue staircase leading to the reception and the red handrails outside.
(From competitor's text)
The proposal replaces the staircase with a new staircase and combines ramps and stairs in a way that is considered dangerous. In addition, the ramp ends up too close to the sidewalk.
