Arrive and Belong
The proposal "Arrive and Belong" reimagines the experience of arriving at the CEPSUM sports center through a design that prioritizes inclusive access, spatial warmth, and visual identity. Rather than replacing existing infrastructure, the project adds complementary pathways and spatial elements, reinforcing the spirit of equity and openness.
The central gesture is the creation of a gentle garden ramp that leads directly to the third-floor reception, reducing reliance on elevators. This new access complies with Canadian standard CSA B651, respecting a maximum slope of 1:12, and aligns naturally with the site's topography.
The existing stair-only entrance to the garden was rethought. A sloped walkway now connects the boulevard, terraces, and parking zones to the base of the new ramp, creating a fully barrier-free journey. All these routes--including the new ramp, existing entrances, and the reception floor--will be equipped with tactile ground surface indicators, ensuring safe and independent navigation for users with visual impairments.
Inside the reception, the service desk was redesigned with multiple heights, wheelchair clearance, and visual-tactile cues, ensuring dignity and comfort for all users.
The parking layout was updated to include additional Persons with Special Needs (PNE) spaces, positioned for easy access to inclusive routes.
A distinctive design choice is the incorporation of color accents inspired by the University's identity, enriching the modernized reception with a sense of place, vibrancy, and belonging.
This proposal embraces the principle of invisible accessibility--creating a shared spatial experience where access is intuitive and equitable, and where everyone belongs from the moment they arrive.
(From competitor's text)
The proposal is largely based on existing layouts, with the addition of a ramp in the gardens. Its use during the winter season will be challenging. No significant change is proposed for the interior.
