Urban design ideas competition: Latin Quarter hub
How can we define a new type of housing for the Latin Quarter, a neighborhood with two distinct hubs that are currently out of sync? Through a strategy of framing public space with housing.
Promenade Maisonneuve, which runs parallel to St. Catherine Street but is slower in nature, fluidly connects the various public spaces of the Quartier des Spectacles along an east-west axis, offering a new rhythm of life to a vibrant but unstructured neighborhood. Through a play of full/empty spaces, this strategy makes it possible to better contain and enliven the squares by framing them in a dense manner. The establishment of new mixed-use blocks with a strong residential focus is combined with the creation of new continuous open spaces at street level.
The diversity of public spaces lining this urban promenade makes it a unique place centered around sustainable transportation (bicycles/public transit). The accessibility, services, and activities of the Latin Quarter promote a new form of city-centered, resolutely collective living that enlivens the public space 24 hours a day.
In their current form, the Habitations Jeanne-Mance (HJM) buildings are a major obstacle to the neighborhood's development. They interrupt the free flow of pedestrians, dilute residential density over too large a plot, and cause the surrounding streets to become extroverted, forcing the adjacent buildings to turn their backs on them. The problem of HJM in the neighborhood is significant, but at the same time offers a unique opportunity to gradually replace it with the Quartier Latin park, a green lung necessary for the residential development of the neighborhood.
We therefore suggest three typologies, each directly related to their context: -A The Graft, a tailor-made urban insertion, traditional in Montreal. -B The Frame, an interior courtyard typology with continuous walkways. -C The Monobloc, a dense, tall volume. The Cadres, which we are promoting, are clearly establishing themselves as a new type of housing closely linked to the urban lifestyles of the Quartier Latin.
