ETHEREAL EMBRACE
The starting point of the design concept was to create an artistic space that preserves existing architectural materials and components while embodying the Olympic spirit, a public plaza, and cultural programs. This space was intended to be an open area where any cultural activity could take place, serving as a space for everyone. The focus was on reconfiguring and processing existing architectural elements to express architectural aesthetics. Additionally, the goal was to design a plaza that allows abundant daylight to enter while providing adequate shade. The concept of sustainability was deeply integrated, considering how to achieve sustainable energy. We envisioned an image of harmony that aligns with the Olympic spirit, with multiple circular rings forming a harmonious footprint, which was then applied to the three-dimensional space. To create a large interior space, we combined truss structures and existing elements to form several massive columns, supplemented with concrete foundations to complete the basic framework. White membranes were then stretched around this framework to create a large screen. Circularly trimmed membranes were connected with cables to form the roof, arranged in multiple layers in a three-dimensional space, allowing indirect sunlight to illuminate the plaza while providing shade and protection from the weather. Inside, the white membranes serve as screens to display art projected by projectors. The plaza was designed with various seating areas, exhibition spaces, and stages, making it a museum-like space where diverse cultural programs generate events based on user activities. As part of sustainability, rainwater collectors made of metal were designed and installed on the truss-structured columns. The collected water is transported through pipes and stored in water tanks installed within the concrete foundation. This design encourages curiosity about architectural aesthetics from the outside and facilitates interaction among visitors through events inside, ultimately achieving the completion of the space. Visitors can experience various cultural activities and the Olympic spirit within a design that integrates sustainable energy and eco-friendly principles. This design provides an open space that promotes interaction and harmony within a public area, allowing everyone to enjoy and participate together.
