VERTICAL FARM + TENT
Situated 800 meters from the Olympic Stadium within Olympic Park, the structure is divided into two main components: a vertical farm and a structural tent.
1. Vertical Farm (Floor Area: 4,800 sq.m): This section supports a variety of agricultural practices, including indoor farming, greenhouse farming, and open soil-based farming. It is designed to maximize crop variety and yield, contributing to food security and urban agriculture.
2. Structural Tent (Floor Area: 10,600 sq.m): This multifunctional space includes areas for a farmers' market, fitness and yoga activities, a 3-day open market, a café, and a food court. The structural tent utilizes repurposed cables and membranes, providing support and aesthetic appeal while maintaining their original function.
Reusability
97% of the 434 connector families is used in the building, making these connectors the most reused components. These connectors are adapted into structural elements with additional reinforcement, such as converting steel pipes (originally liner hangers and flying masts) into composite columns. To ensure longevity the reused steel is treated with polyurethane (epoxy) paints, with patina color to complement the greens and other natural colors of plants, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the greenhouse.
Sustainable Features
The building incorporates several sustainable features designed to enhance environmental performance and efficiency. Strategically placed air circulation corridors facilitate natural airflow, improving indoor air quality and reducing the need for mechanical ventilation systems. The installation of solar panels harnesses renewable energy, significantly lowering the building's carbon footprint and operational costs. Additionally, integrated systems for rainwater harvesting and water recycling promote water conservation and efficient resource management. Together, these features demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency.
