The ideal of this proposal is to provide canopy/shelter for the Esplanade, which is a prevailing public open space for urban events all over the year.
Taking advantages of the re-installing of the Olympic Station roof, the dismantled materials such as memberane, steel connections can be reused for such purpose.
There will be two types of such covering: single-layer memberane in tensile formation, and double-layer memberane which will be welding tightly together and finally results in an inflation unit. Buoyance of pillow unit will offset the weight thus reduce demands on structural/support systems.
Planning strategy takes into account the visual impact for the entire plaza, and ensure any new introduced facilities will not compromise on visual qualities for public activities, especially performance events.
The giant dome shape canopy will become an attracting point of the entire site and this floating feature can be seen from afar which will add positive values to the iconic Olympic stadium.
Necessary measures are required to cope with extreme weathers such as heavy snow and torrential rain. Electricity heating device can be used to prevent large amount aggregation of ice; and excellent drainage system design will ensure temporary water will not be staying long on the top.
Apart from celebrating the engineering technologies, IT technologies can be applied to create more desirable functions. For instance, people in the plaza can demand for the staying position of dome canopy by send headphone message to controlling centre; Likewise, color of dome surface can be changed corresponding to emotional information, and each unit can act individually or collectively just like a drone.
Looking forward, the successful establishing of a floating dome shape canopy will pay way for ongoing installations. Ideally, it will promote annual events such as artificial intelligence completion which competitor will showcase their skills and technologies on controlling/application of this dome. And this must be applauded as it has contributed to a better public participation and technology/economy advancement.
