Square Circle
Over the decades, the residents of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve have consistently demonstrated remarkable tenacity in the face of the borough's heavy industrial past. In this neighborhood, the struggle represents much more than a mere fight; it embodies a raw and authentic expression of daily life in a strong and resilient community. For many years, the streets of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve have been the scene of numerous clashes, and the residents--often from modest backgrounds--have learned to fight for their rights. Street wrestling, much like professional wrestling, symbolizes the courage and perseverance of this community, while reflecting their determination to overcome the challenges of urban life.
The following proposal seeks to promote the popular culture of wrestling, a tradition that has endured for over a century in Montreal. Structural elements from the former roof of the Olympic Stadium are thus repurposed and reinterpreted to create new architectural typologies representative of Montreal's cultural and sporting heritage. The structures incorporate three distinct components--the courtyard, the bleachers, and the stage--which enable the practice and performance of sports in their fullest expression. Designed separately, they can also be used for other events or neighborhood gatherings.
When brought together, the three types of components create an inclusive space capable of accommodating up to 300 people. Flexible, the proposal can adapt to various urban environments. At the intersection of the two grids of the covered structure, the arena serves as the central focal point of the space. The bleachers are positioned along the perimeter, ensuring that spectators become an integral part of the performances--an aspect inseparable from this theatrical sport.
Architects and designers are emerging as key players in the fight against climate change. With this in mind, the proposal aims to become an inspiring Quebec model for material reuse, directly benefiting the residents of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. The repurposing of this construction waste has the potential to contribute to the community, cultural, and social transformation currently underway in the neighborhood, while offering a new showcase for the art of wrestling.
