MONTCOVER
The proposal addresses the challenges surrounding the areas adjacent to Montreal's Olympic Park, historically industrial zones currently undergoing deindustrialization. These areas transition into residential and recreational spaces, necessitating sustainable infrastructural development to enhance residents' quality of life. The project advocates for the repurposing of materials from the dismantled roof of the Montreal Olympic Stadium, transforming them into three types of temporary structures and furniture for fairs.
Initially, these structures will strategically place around the Olympic Park, in the verdant expanses of the stadium's esplanade, Guido Nincheri Park, and nearby open parks, complementing the recreational areas of emerging residential zones. Painted blue, a hue emblematic of Montreal's identity, the new furnishings and structures will integrate harmoniously with the surroundings.
Embracing a participatory construction approach, the community will engage in tasks such as painting and carpentry for fair booths, fostering a sense of ownership. Complex metal structures will be assembled by skilled labor, ensuring structural integrity and longevity.
The three structure types comprise: adaptable structures for temporary fairs, utilizing elements of the stadium roof for sales booths and benches under protective coverings; relaxation spaces with benches, augmented by OSB panels, converting parks into communal hubs; and sales areas for temporary fairs, featuring polycarbonate coverings and OSB-built booths, facilitating local commerce in resilient environments.
In conclusion, this innovative initiative rejuvenates not only the recycled materials from the Olympic Stadium but also revitalizes Montreal's Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. By seamlessly integrating these structures into the urban landscape, communal spaces promoting sustainability and enhancing residents' well-being are forged, offering pragmatic and eco-conscious solutions for public space utilization.
