Aquaponic Community Space
A market place, a food-court and a community space that's based on the aquaponic principle for a pleasant semi-covered roof space; these are the components making up the design you see. The market place is intended to be for small vendors, who might want to rent the space out for any duration, varying from a weekend to a year or so. The community space would be used for a low-cost event space, with food available for catering from the food-court below. It's over 17,000sqm of usable space. Two huge fish tanks on either side of the structure would provide visual attraction to the visitors and water for the aquaponic system installed in the planters on the roof. This can potentially be turned into a semi-covered greenhouse during the winters as well.
As far as the usage of the material from the roof is concerned, I've tried to maximize it, using the elements both structurally and facially. Here's a detailed list:
- On top, the membrane has been designed in 6m x 6m hexagons to accommodate the removed material including the cables in the membrane parameter
- The flying masts have been modified to fit the cones
- The pipe lattice structure will have to be a new addition though
- Next is the roof-top where the stay cables have been turned into the railing
- The wide flanges from the perimeter truss have been used in the support structure of the roof
- The angles have been used in the roof and anywhere else the need arises
- The flying forks have been used in the structure on the ground to provide stability
- The struts have also been modified to be used as columns in the lower structure
- Both of the above are essentially designed to deal with stress, not compression, therefore, the spans on the lower floor are kept deliberately smaller to stabilize the structure
- The outdoor furniture is also clad in the left-over membrane fabric
- The weldments and inner knots are used as tables or counters in the outdoor area
