Description

Our design seeks to reconcile contemporary form with historical context. Overall, the pavilion is inspired by the fundamental materials and forms that make up the landscape: rock, earth, wood, snow and sky. The form of the new pavilion is generated by structure and light, by a desire for transparency from the street to the museum and from the interior courtyard to the Battlefields Park. The ensemble is expressed as a series of interlocking shells in a configuration that captures light and opens onto the city. Offering a synthesis of the rational and the organic, the pavilion possesses the elemental qualities of bone combined with expressive structures inspired by both the Gothic and, more contemporarily, the interpretations of Mackintosh, Gaudí, Guimard and Saarinen. The diverse influences of art, landscape and modern life are intertwined.

This new volume will be enriched with surfaces composed of local and traditional materials such as stone, in reference to the walls of the fortifications of Old Quebec and neighbouring buildings, copper cladding reminiscent of the roofs and various metal structures present in Quebec City, and finally, cabinetry elements composed of local and renewable resources that contribute to rich and warm interior spaces. From the exterior to the interior, we have reinforced opportunities to create links between the city, the landscape and the Museum's collections. The main entrance was designed to provide a significant presence on Grande-Allée. The route is animated and punctuated with meeting places, works from the collection and interactive stations that give the image of a dynamic and attractive Museum to the city.

We redefined the public spaces and the circulation on the site. The landscaping, like the building, is designed to respond to the dynamics of Quebec's seasonal and climatic variations. In addition, there is a desire to link and unify the buildings with diverse architectural characteristics that make up the new MNBAQ and Saint-Dominique Church complex.

The circulation and versatility of the exhibition rooms themselves and of the building as a whole have been greatly improved. This is achieved by introducing a circulation axis at the exhibition level and by opening up the structural module to allow for large-scale exhibitions and meeting areas.

We created new opportunities for views and outdoor spaces on the upper floors of the new pavilion. The third floor, where the permanent collections are housed, is a kind of belvedere with views of the actual museum, the park, the river and the city.

Exterior design
We advanced our concept to increase the visibility of the Grande-Allée façade. The proposed design provides a high level of openness and transparency at the first floor level and creates many visual links from the center of the building to the street, the Plains of Abraham, the new interior courtyard and the pavilions adjacent to the Museum.

The new pavilion is distinguished from the neighbouring Saint-Dominique Church by a new volumetric expression, but is similar to it in its materiality, its axial organization and the expression of its structure.

The south façade was reconfigured to integrate more harmoniously with the rest of the pavilion and to create a belvedere accessible from the upper level of the building. A protected terrace modulates the sunlight on the south façade and provides views of the other pavilions of the Museum, the park and the river.

The interior courtyard and the garden pavilion (administrative pavilion) contribute to a better integration of the new pavilion with the existing buildings. Slender birch trees structure and color the courtyard, accentuate the visual relief and connect the courtyard to the surrounding nature. In its form and expression, the garden pavilion refers to the church and the main pavilion of the Museum.

Entrance path / Ground floor
On Grande-Allée, the entrance is indicated by a new architectural volume and by the presentation of works from the collection towards the street. Above, a space has been created for the eventual integration of art with architecture, and an integrated LED arrangement allows for a renewable display of works and information on a large scale. The lobby provides access to the auditorium and checkroom below, the presbytery (location of the future museum store), the great hall, and the staircase to the main exhibition rooms.

Exhibition Hall Levels
Connected to the main hall by public elevators and a monumental staircase, the main exhibition spaces occupy the upper two levels of the pavilion. These rooms have a unique spatiality because of their visual links to the exterior, their regular and rhythmic composition and their volumetry that is modelled on the structure and envelope of the building.

Choice of materials
The shell of the building will be made of cast-in-place concrete; exterior cladding of copper, stone and transparent and translucent glass; floors will be of wood and stone; and finally, the interior walls will have a smooth and bright gypsum surface. The stone for the exterior cladding and floors will be sourced from quarries located near Quebec City. This stone has the expected characteristics and level of performance and aesthetics. We plan to use as much as possible materials that are available nearby in order to reduce the energy consumption caused by transportation. For metals, we have chosen a copper cladding with a stable patina.

While respecting the many legends and traditions of Quebec, the realization of this new pavilion will be a decisive and unique turning point for the city and the Museum. Functionally, the new pavilion will unite the Museum complex into a single entity, creating a symbiosis with the city and its history, while affirming its uniqueness.

STAGE 1

-The jury appreciated the simplicity and clarity of the solution.

STAGE 2

The jury is divided on this project which, for some, represents audacity, seduction and elegance, for others, it lacks contextual roots and declines like a garden pavilion. The repetition of the formal module creates a certain form of rigidity, while for others it creates rich and luminous interior spaces.

The folding concept maintains its interest but its hermeticism minimizes the dialogue with the presbytery, the church and the Plains. Much effort is focused on the structure, which penalizes the flexibility sought; the technical challenges are considerable.

Nevertheless, the simplicity of the volume facilitates an efficient and clear organization, each level being identical; the link with the tunnel is well done. The comparative study of the exhibition rooms demonstrates good museum expertise.

The team demonstrated a willingness to listen and to work with the Museum; however, the project seems unadaptable without the addition of a garden pavilion, disconnected from the volume/image and poorly developed.
