Description

Stage 1

Layers of time and place

Within the 4.6 billion years in the Geological his-tory of earth, the rough 2 million Years of humans on earth, is proportionally a small fragment, and the approx. 5- 6.000 years of what we define as civilization are merely a blink of an eye. Standing on the threshold of what is now defined, as the Anthropocene aera, facing exponential acceleration where human development, if not corrected are seriously threatening our own existence.

Site

Zooming in on our small site that as a palimpsestic sponge tells the history of Montreal and together with this, the history of Canada and the New World. As the area was once a meeting point for indigenous peoples, long before European settlers arrived.

Later as an important trading point and the point of departure for all western and northern journeys, although small, global in outreach. It seems like a perfect fit for an ever evolving cultural institution, locally anchored, with a global relevance and outreach.

The palimpsest site

The site itself tells the story of the development of the city, in added layers of existing build material, and in traces of what has been deleted.

The building complex has developed as a living organism, that has grown within the site limits vertically and horizontally.

As Classical examples of heritage that has continued living through time and has been serving the needs of inhabitants at any time.

In a transformation that has to serve the needs of our time, there is always priorities to be taken, what to add and what to remove.

We suggest to declutter the inner courtyard, to remove minor additions, and to remove interior elements and decoration that confuses the direct reading of the building complex in parallel times.

Stage 2

"On the observational side, by far the most important development has been the measurement of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation by COBE (the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite) and other collaborations. These fluctuations are the fingerprints of creation, tiny initial irregularities in the otherwise smooth and uniform early universe that later grew into galaxies, stars, and all the structures we see around us. Their form agrees with the predictions of the proposal that the universe has no boundaries or edges in the imaginary time direction; but further observations will be necessary to distinguish this proposal from other possible explanations for the fluctuations in the background. However, within a few years we should know whether we can believe that we live in a universe that is completely self-contained and without beginning or end"

Site

At the scale of the site, the place, like a historical sponge, a palimpsest, tells the story of Montreal. The site's proximity to the St. Lawrence River has long been central to the lives of the region's inhabitants. An important trading point and the starting point for many voyages to the west and north, Montreal, today, has an international reputation. Located in the city's historic district, the house and the remains of the commercial building, built by the merchant Du Calvet in the eighteenth century, by virtue of their original functions, their location, and their architecture, are perfect examples of the foundations of Montreal. It therefore seems more than an appropriate site to locate PHI's new project, PHI Contemporain, an evolving cultural institution with local roots and global relevance and reach.

Jury Report

Stage 1

An elegant proposal developed with a successful contextual and human-based approach. The relationship between the old and the new is harmonious. Great care has been taken to ensure that the proportions are correct. The result is a sensitive project, respectful of its environment and responding to the needs of a world-class institution.

In the development of the architectural concept, consideration of how the proposal's contextual approach can equally reflect and embody PHI Contemporary's mission focused on innovation, experimentation, decompartmentalization of disciplines and openness to all audiences should be demonstrated. This in terms of the programmatic spatial content and the urban presence of this avant-garde institution.

The overall functionality of the architectural concept should also be considered in-depth, with particular attention to the scale of exhibition spaces (and their capacity to house larger scale works in a variety of media) and to the configuration of circulation, where the extensive use of ramps was questioned. Finally, the architectural concept must continue to demonstrate a good understanding of heritage, urban and regulatory constraints.
