DESIGN ISSUES
This pavilion is designed with two major objectives beyond the primary program. These are.
1. A project which announces the City of Edmonton's interest in sustainable design and carbon footprint reduction. Edmonton is already a global leader in effective waste management. With its abundance of hours of sunlight, it is a natural location for a demonstration project using solar power.
2. As the Millwoods Sports Park is a host site for major events, its pavilion should serve as a point of reference for users within the large park and an identifiable urban marker for the community. Its image alone should make its location immediately knowable.
DESIGN RATIONALE
To achieve these objectives we have proposed a green roof building and berm overlooking a south facing courtyard dominated by a major photo-voltaic structure. The courtyard would host social gatherings and public presentations. Its backdrop would unmistakably identify the Millwoods community and the City's concern about sustainability. The structure would provide a recognizable silhouette and a point of reference from any part of the large park.

The jury found it difficult to settle on awards for this park. Most of the preferred submissions were deemed to be too expensive to construct. This winner may be the most controversial since it was presented as the Net Zero Pavilion with extensive sustainability attributes but, in fact, it was awarded for its iconographic qualities. As a completely energy independent building, it would not meet the budget, nor the mandate of the city. The signature of this scheme is a dramatic 'tree' that would have a significant landmark quality. There were concerns that the program was not completely resolved but the building itself is so simple and straight forward that the jury felt it could be refined to meet the budget. The jury felt that the iconographic quality of the 'tree' would be a wonderful visual anchor for this park and the public art consultant confirmed that the 'tree' as designed by the architect would be an excellent 'canvas' for public art.
