COMMEMORATE_PLANT_AND_SEE
Concept: the new master plan of Point Pleasant Park is based on and inspired by the evolution constantly changing of the tree cover and the past human activities, especially by the military ones. Soon came the idea to apply a protective strategy and an overall vision of the site to protect and restore. The application of the military sight openings was then accepted and a rigorous ecologic plan to be implanted.
Goals: the main objective of the proposition is to create a sustainable framework for regenerating the forest, and to renew the image of a regional park for the next fifty years. Another idea is, as we are almost building a park from scratch, the vision to controle the visual openings from the highest points of PPP, almost a «cliché» to the protective aspect of the Point. To be able to regenerate the forest, a sustainable ecological program was put in place theoretically speaking, but also to reveal in a sensitive manner the different periods of the site through times: the wood wall (that will represent a piece of the past woods and in the future the limits between the human planted forest and the natural one), the stumps and trunks (representing the past hurricane). And finally create extraordinary settings for a range of activities and program that is unique to the city, by the implantations of flexible places, features, land art or punctual and temporary interventions.
Cambridge battery is meant to be another open space linked to the sea, by paths but mostly by the view which dictate is design. Direct acces to the auditorium is connected to the site.wood log auditorium is meant to be representative of the past of PPP and also the new recycled and innovative regeneration of the park. It offers under pruned trees an incredable panorama on the see, which could be the theatre of spectacles.
The sea front area is ponctuated by small places in relationship with the antique military features (PPP battery, Northwest Arm Battery, Chain rock battery). It is mostly a protected area (with an eventual plantation allowing soil retention against erosion)
Martello Tower, at one of the highest point of PPP, serves as the exemple of the planting strategy fowarded toward the panoramic views. The area surrounding the tower with the low cut grasses and lefted stumps, punctuates the site, giving him a rhytmic and another way to look at the palimpsest scene.
The nursery is the fundamental ecological backbone of PPP as it provides the park with resources for the rehabilitation of the forest and the fauna. Preserved from the pedestrians it will succeed in preserving and providing most of the endemic plants.
Wood barrier: this element also called wood protection is one of the most important elements for the ecological survival of the forest. It consist in a protection of the only parts remaining from the original forest, and also be the ecologic «niche» of the site, as it will become the nursery for retransplantation process of PPP. It varies from 1 to 2 meters high, and topographically marks the site but most of all, mark, and will marks in people's minds the event of hurricane Juan.
Three main networks serves the site providing fast and direct access through the forest from each of the important places to each other's. Several informal smaller paths through the forest cross theses paths. Those networks will travel through the first planted and most densified plantation.
Ogilvy fort, this famous historic place is dedicated for a kid's playground respective of the site, structurally speaking, with the use of inflatable game structures for example.
Temporary swimming pool allowing the bath at black rock beach until the depolution of the harbour.
Harbour side entry (versatile parking lot) with the reception, cafe and information center. Mostly dedicated for locals.
Temporary and changing panels for «camouflage» purposes, made of recycled dead trees of PPP left by the hurricane.
Integrated architecture, serving as first light reception building through which you can directly transite to
the park
The main entrances are kept as is to bleed into the neighbourhood. But from the tower road, the entrance is marked by dead trees in place in the parking lot for the people to remember the fragility of the park and also to punctuate transition and the link to the city. (Stefan Tischer)
