Master Plan Description
The Master Plan has been conceived in two parts, first, a strategic Management Plan, and second, a detailed Public Use Master Plan. The Management Plan addresses strategic issues associated with the ecological restoration of the site for long-term forest and shoreline management. The Management Plan also identifies strategies and priorities for protecting, preserving and restoring the cultural heritage features. The Management Plan establishes overarching zones, within which uses, reconstruction activities and long-term maintenance procedures are outlined.
The Management Zones for Point Pleasant Park include:
• Forest Preserve Zone
• Natural Heritage Restoration Zone
• Cultural Heritage Restoration Zone
• Shoreline Restoration Zone
Each of the Management Zones has clear priorities and sets out the permissible activities within each area.
Forest Preserve Zone
• Interior forest restoration zone
• Limited public access
• Priority for Acadian forest reconstruction and habitat creation for target species
Natural Heritage Restoration Zone
• Restoration of a diverse range of landscape habitats (forests, meadows, wetland in quarry pond)
• Priority area for park access and parking
• Focus for recreation facilities such as park arrival/entrance, interpretive facilities, new beach house, updated theatre, new park pavilions/picnic shelters)
• Priority area for "nature" trails and multi-use paths
Cultural Heritage Restoration Zone
• Adaptive re-use of existing features where appropriate
• Interpretation of significant features and sites
• Restoration of the cultural heritage structures and landscapes
• Protection (limit public access) of sensitive historic features
Shoreline Restoration Zone
• Protect and rehabilitate degraded shoreline features
• Priority area for riparian habitat improvement
• Priority area for "shoreline" trails with controlled public access in sensitive areas
• Focus on improving public use along non-sensitive areas along the water's edge
The Public Use Master Plan is an overlay of the Management Plan that describes in detail the recreational use, locations and facilities that are required to improve the recreation experience in the park.
Revitalized Park Entry
One of the most significant public use improvements is the renovation of the existing park entry to provide a more functional and welcoming arrival experience. The park entry will be punctuated with a new entrance drive to address public transit and public drop-off, group assembly and orientation. The Plan proposes adapting the existing Point Pleasant Lodge for expanded programming in education and heritage interpretation. The relationship between the Lodge, quarry pond and new interpretive trails are improved to provide a focused and more functional introduction to the park and its resources. Public parking will continue to be located in the present locations; however, access for the disabled and special group users will be integrated along the new 'Gatehouse Drive'.
