Approach to Park Renewal
While the park was a creation of the 19th century public park movement in creating some spectacular settings, the new scheme proposes a strategy that generate new forms of a recreational forest and coast, and propose to the public an experience of discovering the wealth of a healthy ecosystem using the interaction between human, vegetation and fauna.
We propose a Park that would use a spatial strategy based on the cells form that work in synergy and in cooperation between each other, The Park also use existing technologies and experiments that enhance existing forest and encourage biodiversity which adds to a collection pool of observations. The morphology of the cell offers a rich model for developing a dynamic interface between each other. Each cell is autonomous and possess a specify role in the organization of its immediate and enlarged. These will be found in categcr ries regrouped in three big natural systems: the human cell, the fauna cell and the vegetal cell. All combine their energy and force with the environment. This union create a synergy in between the cells, which has for effect the multiplication of the nutrients regenerators of the forest and maximize the experiences along the walkway for the visitors.
To be precise, the components of the human cells carries the artistic elements which reflect the diversity of the local and ethnics cultures. Some structures witch will allow views of the site will be dedicated to the interpretation of the Park and animation while other like the amphitheatre will be use for drama and performances.
Secondly, characteristics of the certain vegetal cell will be use to protect young plantation from wind while others could fed and stabilize the ground. These interventions will allow the visitors to be sensibilize to the different en vironmental ecosystems in place and theirs roles in the creation of the
Park.
This structure and organization is unique and adapted to the site. Its constitute the basis of a new generation of parks for the XXI th century.
Approach to Site Context
Point Pleasant Park is a natural and recreational space intended for the health and spiritual welfare of the citizens of Halifax. Once completed, it will offer it community many occasions to be sensibilized to the cultural, natural and historical elements of the site.
This Park represents a scientific tools equipment intended for groups and people interested in learning about methods and management of sustainable environment.
Pedestrians and bicycle paths, roads and infrastructures will be add to enhance the link between the peninsula, the historical center of Halifax and the Park. Then it will become a major pole of interest adding to another dimension in the tourism activities of the city.
Near the coast, visitors will enjoy the proximity of the sea for swimming, fishing and boat excursions.
Approach to Park entrance design
There are many existing entrances to the park. We suggest to keep three major ways in order to conserve the character and intimacy of visitors and adjacent residents. Also, a group of mature trees will be conserve without risk. The three entrances are, first tower road, second young avenue and the third one, the street at the end of Pleasant drive close to the breakwater.
We suggest first to preserve and restore the wall that surround the Park. It's gives character and its own identity. The wall should be enhance with the use of plants, furniture and appropriate lighting. The roads located at the periphery of the park will be landscape using the stormwater management technology and appropriate lighting will be install to create harmony with the city.
The entrance at Tower road was chosen to represent the forest sector. The welcome center will host an interpretation area and a structure to receive groups. The theme of filtration will be explore by the architectural building and the landscape architectural surroundings.
In order to give the park it's unique character, we propose to reforest the actual parking lot, to restore the vegetal vault with the existing trees. The new parking lot will then become a rain garden close to the building.
The second entrance is located at the end of Young street and will only use by pedestrian. It's way will be converted with cultural and sculptural details or elements.
Finally, the thirth and last entrance will be landscape to create a new buffer between the activities of the port and the parking structures. (Beauregard et Associés Inc.)
