SUPERPOSITIONS
Quantitatively speaking, the industrialization of the housing industry has adequately managed to produce housing for everyone. However, from a qualitative standpoint, the technical approach fails to offer answers to the problems of ghettoization, mixity, promiscuity, etc. Until collective society does not engage itself to help and support the less-fortunate fringes of society, the architecture of social housing will remain a simple exercise that rationalizes living spaces. Our project addresses the idea, as much literal as metaphoric, of the "support" that must be given. Mixity is a concept which is central to our project. However, contrary to the traditional methods of planning, we are not tabling an artificial mixity by programming the super blocks ourselves; instead we are relying on the natural mixity of the city to implant itself.
With interventions inserting themselves into the existing context rather than onto the tabula rasa of modernity, our project explores social housing from the angles of dispersion and dissemination. Our proposal introduces social housing into the urban body by means of a graft of sorts. The richness of the city centre becomes the support for this graft, with new urban strata implement on roves, which insomuch transforms the nature and capacity of the body, and its graft. Once the interstitial space is created, the two parts share all vital systems which are needed to make architecture come alive. By offering to hitch onto both its structure and infrastructure, the host body becomes both a support and a new appendage; an integral part of the urban body. In fact, the doubling-up of the program of creating green roofs along with the social housing project permits the creation, on each of the parcels, a new inhabited space. It acts then, as a mediator between users of the host buildings and the inhabitants of the domestic environments, putting in place a system of mutualism, where contrary to a simple parasite, all parties are enriched by this new relationship.
