SITE: VANCOUVER

Reconfiguring the geographic dichotomy between the affluent and impoverished, Vancouver constructs some of Canada's wealthiest neighbourhoods adjacent to the Downtown Eastside (DTES), one of the country's poorest urban areas. The latter stands in increasingly sharp contrast to the built expansion of both the capital capacity and the symbolic imagery of Vancouver as a world-class city. As a result, development pressures are now wilfully focused on the DTES through the implementation of policies characteristic of the Vancouver model that seek targeted social goods through market development. However, the model itself has thus far not proven as effective in providing core needs such as the provision of housing for the city's poorest residents, as much as lifestyle amenities valued by the market. Considering the pressure to reimagine the DTES, the presentation of a counterflow back into the heart of the Vancouver model constructs a product that, while deriving its basic tenets from the model, introduces aberrations that fracture its ingrained spirit of exclusivity in favor of informing the interaction of disparate individuals in the city. Through reconfiguring the basis of ownership, embracing a restrained expression of private space and facilitating interaction at both the site and urban levels, the proposal seeks inclusivity through challenging the stratified constructions of social class.
