Aspect Variant
Six structures would be constructed in the interstices of the exhibition grounds. The structures will be built of familiar materials, rough sawn lumber and polycarbonate greenhouse sheeting, and would contain variable elements for resting, including a swinging bench and a seat of native granite blocks. Through materiality, craftsmanship and site location, our goal is to evoke memories of place that generate from the body's position within minimally constructed space.
We propose to collaborate with the garden's caretakers to site the structures; referencing their intimate knowledge of the grounds to seek out the landscape's underappreciated and unseen aspects. Lightweight, unitized building components allow the six structures to be constructed without damaging the land, and to be sited without limitations.
The abstract familiarity of these structures will de-objectify the built elements and focus the visitors' attention on their relationship to and experience of the landscape environment. As they inhabit varied levels of enclosure and opening, the visitors' focus and their physical connection to their surroundings is amplified. Through materiality, craftsmanship and site awareness the structures will become site specific elements whose meaning and experience cannot be separated from their location.
