Dead tree garden
The Macabre and the Mysterious
Always implicit, always taboo, the theme of death in paradise gardens is superseded, conquered, or simply rendered mute. This creates a fascination with death. Therefore, it is the garden that we go to for praying, for contemplating the afterlife. It is the garden- Gethsemane- ¬where we go to face death.
Dead Tree Garden is made of death- dead things reused and repurposed. Dead specimen trees, refused from landscape projects of the pri¬or year, are placed in a clearing of crushed recycled concrete and arranged according to a specific aesthetic logic. The recycled concrete creates a canvas for the shapes of the trees and their shadows to play against. It invites pedestrians and enriches the aural and visual experi¬ence. As days and weeks pass, the concrete acts as a protective mulch for the wildflower perennials that have been seeded in the topsoil below. These hardy plants spring to life in the areas that have had the least foot traffic, creating wildflower gardens and defining pathways.
The Dead Tree Garden is strange; different yet familiar. It intones mythical landscapes, beautiful and stark. It is a non-sequitur, a juxtaposition of common materials, a celebration of the macabre.
