Detox Box
Our project concept frames paradise (as a work in progress) within the destructive forces undermining environmental health. We use the design to turn attention to the pollutants from industry in the river adjacent to the garden festival. Mercury (Hg), primarily deposited from the burning of coal for power, and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) from the metals and power industries, are two of the significant pollutants in the St. Lawrence River watershed.
Two walls framing the paradise garden rise from water. Coal fills one gabion wall, and the other wall is an aluminum bale wall, or a gabion wall full of crushed aluminum cans. Visitors pass through the walls to enter into a paradise garden, filled with plants that remediate the pollutants in the river. In the center of the garden is a pool of clear water, expressing the plants' capacity to clean water. The plants grow vigorously, providing continual seasonal interest through flower and `fruit
