Fresh escape fragile paradise
Gateway
This view is of a gateway, a teaser as such to what lies ahead. I have selected the polar bear and a zebra as they are incredibly majestic animals. They act as a signifier of our unique and extraordinary planet.
The polar bear and zebra are precariously mounted on glass plinths. They hover over visitors and act as a portal. They are playful sculptures which possess serious meaning. They act as a beacon a warning symbol but appear superficially kitsch objects. Polar bears appear strong and resilient yet are at serious risk of climate change. The Zebra is a symbol of the foreign, the exotic and the ‘other'. Scientists and naturalists alike are united in the hope that humankind will embrace the earth and work towards combating further destruction of our ecosystem. Phenomenology theorists suggest that we are all interconnected and it is is only through touching, seeing & feeling that we learn & understand the world. My room/garden concept provides a fun yet serious space for the community to unite in and experience the world of paradise.
Fragile room
The fragile room pays homage to Artic/Antartic landscapes. The graphic use of iceberg references is a 3m film applied to an adhoc plywood wall. It is a play on the idea of a summer winter garden. I wish for the visitors to be overwhelmed by the abundance and sculptural forms of the floral islands. I have created two islands which appear separated . They have suffered the same fate as some recent broken iceshelfs. Walls surrounds the space giving the garden an enclosed and private atmosphere. It maybe a consideration to limit the amount of people in the space by setting up viewing times. I would like people to experience isolation and a feeling of remoteness in this space. It would heighten the viewers experience & encourage a deeper connection with the space.
Masi wall
Lush, cool, bright and graphic transition space
Tranquil room
Visitors can lie and soak up the atmosphere of the garden. They are invited to lie down & enjoy the surrounds. The kitschy oversized Zebra is placed inside the pond to act as a signifier that paradise is found on earth. Behind the zebra is a large piece of ice in the shape of an iceberg which will melt during the festival as a reminder of climate change and the fragility of the environment. Located next to the sun beds will be some sunscreen, science and geography magazines. This design is a pleasure/ information space it is designed to be simple yet decorative. The zebra could evolve to look less like a real zebra and its design could become more abstract.
