Gravity and grace : Simon Well's cloud
Beginning with a seed (germ) our project is based upon unitized construction of two independent but related units. These units combine to form larger patterns of growth, structure and space.
With two major spaces formed by these constructions placed in deliberate spatial relationship to existing site conditions, The first space attracts [S1] pulls and gathers aspects of Sky through elements of wall (screen) ground (berm) and ceiling (canopy).
This construction evokes woods, leaves and clouds. It connects materially to the site through the folds and bends of poplar veneer and aluminum. The earth berm gives the scent of ground and summer sweet. The visitor turns, dwells and meanders through the clearings and woods [S3], a transitional threshold which simultaneously separates and binds. The remnants of the first space flow into the second.
The scent of wood mint perfumes the air. The space running beside the creek [S3] then shifts to fluidity and release. The space then changes to one of fluid release. Suggestive of flight, lightness and release.
This unitized construction evokes grass, boat, wing, currents. Translucent fibreglass forms the units.
