Guildford: cornered - place - making at mall's edge
The proposal is the efficient and multiple uses of expensive Inner city commercial spaces. Instead of locating an on-ground recreational open space or park development - an elevated pedestrian podium across 104th Avenue is proposed. The podium shall contain greenery, mostly soft landscaping, park furniture, cafes, flower shops, kiosks, etc. The width shall be within the allowable three car slots as set in the criteria. Gently spiraling pedestrian ramps are the primary access modes. Disabled-friendly access is by a hydraulic scenic elevator inside a polycarbonate tube that also serves as a structural element. Structural supports are supplemented by sculptured stainless steel tubings and integrated light fixtures. Provisions for all-weather protection is by convertible and movable "greenhouse type" polycarbonate roof panels that can also double up as photovoltaic cells. Power could also be sustainably supplied by electricity generated by pressure plates embedded in the roadway absorbing kinetic energy from the weight of passing vehicles. The prolific use of clear polycarbonates Is Intended to create an Illusion of a floating garden park and minimize the structural "bulk" across the avenue's airspace.
