The proposal for Guildford Town Centre is an urban park organized on a grid of rows of blueberry bushes. The highbush blueberries, cranberries, strawberries and other seasonal berry crops planted throughout the park provide habitat for threatened bee populations as well as an agricultural education and demonstration project. Plazas, playgrounds and picnic areas are sited amongst the rows of blueberry bushes. The central spine of the park is an irrigation channel that circulates collected rainwater for irrigation and some building uses. A generous pedestrian promenade, dedicated bicycle path and vegetation buffer run parallel to the water channel.
Two twin glass pavilions, an ice cream parlour and a 'fresh' market, anchor the park at the intersection of 152nd Street and 104th Avenue. The pavilions are minimal structures composed of glass, steel, concrete and wood. Flexible open floor plans allow for complimentary day and night uses such as craft fairs, farmer's markets, exhibitions, and special events throughout the year. The transparency of the pavilions reveal the varied activities inside to passersby while permitting views through the buildings to the landscape and context beyond. In the evening, the glass pavilions act as lanterns signaling the gateway to Guildford.
