Planétarium de Montréal
A journey through space - the Montreal way

Integration in urban context
In the context of the Olympic Park - next to the Biodome - our concept of ''a journey through space'' proposes a landmark building celebrating the uniqueness of the Montreal rock base. Instead of working with the height limitations we are creating a flat building with a green roof collecting and directing day light deep into the space. The Planetarium is a 42x42m cubic volume in which the two theater spheres are floating in space. Two large 20m-diameter glass-roof openings are extended vertically with solar irradiation sails - landmark signs for the unique ecological concept and all encompassing museum concept.

Concept Museologique
The visitors entering the museum from the -Place Planète- (niveau B2) are experiencing different levels moving downwards on terraces. The group entry on Niveau B1 is connecting on this journey that is continued together. The sensation is a meditative, almost spiritual one, like going through a process of preparations before entering the main Planetarium Space. The mind is set and focused. Instead of a generic service building and the theatre spaces our project offers a third typology making it the first of its kind Planetarium Museum in which the two spheres float in space. Their special materialization allows for changing exterior impressions by means of LED and projection experienced from different angles and perspectives during the journey through the museum. The exhibition spaces, ateliers and expos are on different interconnected levels and platforms - all part of one unique space.
