Circle Square
A sustainable redevelopment proposal for a mixed-use arterial site in Vancouver.
Circle Square proposes a neighbourhood plaza linking citywide public transit to a proposed network of redeveloped pedestrian and bicycle-friendly laneways. The proposal converts an existing four-way intersection to a roundabout, increasing efficiency and safety while reducing vehicle noise and emissions. Breaking the grid, we define a new transit node that brings together public transportation, commerce, housing and community spaces. An open oculus at the centre of the roundabout provides natural daylight to a new underground skytrain station. The station is linked to the immediate surroundings through entrances integrated into the patterns of daily residential movement.
This scheme introduces a civic building at the point of arrival between the skytrain and new public square. The project proposes the importance of the civic role in cultivating sustainable urban life. The architecture incorporates along the eastern edge of the public square solar panels and a tank-based odorless solar aquatic waste filtration system, making visible our use of resources and communal strategies towards environmental responsibility. The latter is a proven sustainable technology whereby septic waste is treated locally through a natural processe.
While preserving the character of existing residential and commercial street frontage, mixed-use development along laneways creates more affordable spaces for housing and ‘close-to-home' commerce, minimizing commuting. These intimately scaled, reanimated backstreets promote alternative forms of transportation and contribute to a more people-oriented public realm.
