The heart of Eco-Density is about making our urban centers more livable, and to stop the exodus of families to the suburbs, Habitat 2010 addresses the needs of hard-working, average families: people with jobs, kids, pets, and a desire to live in the city without compromising their quality of Life. Unlike most 'affordable' developments, Habitat2010 will feature big, family-sized units (3 and 4 bedrooms), and backyard-sized terraces for each of the 50 homes all in a cutting edge, landmark building. And with integrated day-care, greenhouse, workshops, transit and retail, all the amenities of a community will be next door.
Habitat 2010 will showcase the latest in environmental technology. A rooftop PV panel farm will power the building, the sunshades on the East, South: and West elevations have integrated Solar hot-water piping, and a geothermal system will all dramatically reduce the community's carbon footprint. Rainwater collection and grey water recovery will be used to irrigate the extensive green-roofs and greenhouse, as well as for flushing toilets. Window walls and irregular floor plans ensure natural light and ventilation throughout the homes. Cork-aggregate concrete topping for the steel structure will provide thermal and acoustic insulation as well as fire resistance.
Habitat 2010 is about bringing the appeal of the suburbs to a densified urban landmark. Homes will be designed to accommodate real families with 3 arid 4 bedroom units, functional floor plans including dedicated family rooms, and useful outdoor space; most units have grassed green roofs, bringing the backyard to the high-rise. Insulated translucent wall panels ensure privacy between neighbours while enhancing interiors with a soft: natural light, And with access to day care facilities and transit in the building, working families will be able to spend less time commuting and more time enjoying our beautiful city together.
