Layered Village

The proposed urban form for Vancouver attempts to address the sustainability issue by achieving the greatest amount of desnity on a site while minimizing its impact on existing low-density neighbourhoods. Much focus is given toward the quality of space rather than the quantity of space, such that while most residential units don't offer expansive views due to their close proximity to each other; the immediate surroundings are highly liveable and uses the space constrainsts to its advantage to provide a visual and psychological buffer to allow for both privacy and casual surveillance. The principle applies to the intended perception of density from the outside, where the laneway is fronted by three and a half stories of greenwall and stonework to mitigate the impact of the density above. 12 stacked townhouses are configured to appear as 3 large ones, in keeping with the scale of the neighbourhood.
