TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES PROPOSAL
Our proposal addresses these issues by providing initiatives to combine living spaces with rented purpose-built work spaces, adaptable, multi¬cultural and regionally-relevant community spaces and the latest green technologies in a way that asserts a direct and interconnected relation¬ship between ecological issues and social issues.
BACKGROUND
The predominant approach to Vancouver's existing mixed-use mid- density living caters to an extremely limited demographic (namely: students, young professionals, and some seniors) and neglects the changing needs of individuals as they transition through the various stages of life. This model is in itself unsustainable as it necessitates constant moving which has large ecological consequences and is detrimental to the development of socially sustainable, lasting communities. In order for Vancouver to reach its goal of becoming the greenest city in the world, its communities must balance an ability to retain existing residents with their ability to attract new ones.
THESIS
New mixed-use mid-density housing must accommodate for an increasingly wider demographic with particular respect paid to the needs of urban families who are dealing with the lack of affordable suitably-sized living spaces (ie: 2-3 bedroom apartments), the rising cost of food, high cost of energy and dual income arrangements. In addition, this model must respect Vancouver's increasing multiculturalism and be relevant to the diverse backgrounds of its people.
