INTENSIFYING NEIGHBOURHOOD
This proposal for a new apartment typology in Vancouver is conceived as a replacement for the ubiquitous three-storey walkup. The intent of this project is to maintain the desir¬able qualities of the three-storey rental apart¬ment building while making better use of the lot, increasing the residential density, allow¬ing for a greater variety and flexibility in the sizes of units, improving ventilation and light quality, and providing a local, commercial mixed-used component. Realized in the city's West End, the new type would offer a greater intensity of inhabitation that could facilitate a new network of programmed space at the ur¬ban scale, and engender a new cross-grain movement through the neighbourhood over time.
FORMAL MOVES, SOCIAL OPERATIONS
Taking advantage of the fact that convention¬al three-storey walkups often occur side-by-side, or even in longer chains, the project pro¬poses stitching two lots together, capitalizing on opportunities to share resources (though the type is adaptable to the standard West End lot). The existing walkup is a dense box, with a public front facing the street across a formal front yard and a service back along the laneway. To make better use of this space, we pulled the conventional block building apart and pushed the pieces to the edges of the lot(s) to create a central courtyard. This creates an agile, double-fronted façade on both the street and the lane, activating the side yards as public thoroughfares, presen¬tation galleries for businesses, and ground floor access to commercial spaces.
