GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE COMPETITOR

Description

The impetus of this project is to offer a sustainable contribution to the existing fabric of the West End. Furthermore the project takes full advantage of the latent and underutilized spaces that are currently being used for parking. The proposed development of these spaces takes into consideration the environmental and social sensitivities of the site. The solution will not only support the inherent ecology of the building but will also enhance the social environment.

Objectives:

- Recycle organic waste to minimize eco impact

- Take advantage of the under utilized parking for a better and sustainable use

- Create a link between the back alley and the front street by programmatic and spatial use

- Alternative food growth

Additionally, keeping in view the new Eco Density Charter of the City of Vancouver, the proposed plan provides the residents the ability to live in their neighborhoods as they pass through different stages and ages of their lives. The addition to the existing building provides such opportunities to accommodate the changing dynamics of a family.

Back alleys not only are under used spaces but also waste of land use, considering high prices of land in the Westend. Enlivening the back alley was also a major consideration that was incorporated into the project design. Existing Westend grid is like a weave of a fabric – with wefts and warps, however the grid has big gaps in the form of back alleys. Therefore, enlivening the back alleys introduces a new weave to the existing fabric of the city grid. By incorporating back alleys into the existing Westend grid will create a more animated and colorful fabric. Enlivening back alleys will generate new hubs.
