Description

The Challenge

The most important challenge that Vancouver will have to address over the next 100 years is a change in attitude. The current attitude in relation to the environment is one of con¬trol. Shifting attitudes might not only effect the amount of green house gas emissions that humans are releasing into the atmosphere, shirting attitudes can restructure the rela¬tionship of the built environment to natural forces. Future changes due to climate change and an increasing population can be used as opportunities opposed to constraints that challenge current social norms and help designers begin to re-imagine new relationships and ways of living.

The Concern

Current attitudes clearly delineate a line between natural forces and inhabitable land. Climate change will result in the need to raise dikes in order to control future sea level rise and flooding in turn creating a larger risk. The Fraser River Delta dikes and past land reclamation have destroyed 70% of the areas wetlands. Sea level rise may result in squeezing the remaining marsh against the current dikes. A new form of land control is necessary in order to maintain this habitat. Projected population rise in Vancouver will require large amounts of agricuitural land with access to irrigation in order to maintain BC's current level of self-reliance.

The Solution

Develop an urban fabric that challenges the permanence and rigid delineation of land use by property lines, dikes and other mechanisms of control with the proposition for a soft infrastructural framework. Through harnessing the natural processes of sediment accumulation that is occur¬ring in the Fraser River Delta this project creates a new form of land control and reclamation that allows for flex¬ibility and change to occur in response to natural forces and disasters. Upon this geometrically evolving frame¬work new types of architecture can emerge that have the ability to adapt to a flexible infrastructure, while allowing natural systems and processes to challenge current social and cultural norms.
