THIS PROPOSAL DRAWS FROM EXAMPLES OF SUSTAINABLE, PEDESTRIAN-FRIENDLY URBANISM FOUND IN BARCELONA, COPENHAGEN AND CURITIBA. AS DISCUSSED IN “VANCOUVER 101,” IT ADDRESSES ISSUES OF WALKABLE COMMUNITIES, TRANSIT NODES, REDUCTION IN AUTOMOBILE USE, INCREASED USE OF SUSTAINABLE MODES OF TRANSIT, AND USING SUSTAINABLE URBAN DESIGN TO NOT JUST RESPECT, BUT RE-INFORCE AND
ENHANCE NEIGHBOURHOOD AND CIVIC IDENTITY, CONTEXT AND CHARACTER.
AS THE GVRD DENSIFIES, EXPANDS ITS TRANSIT AND FOCUSES ON TRANSIT-ORIENTED TOWN CENTRES MORE OF VANCOUVER'S GROWING DOWNTOWN WORKING POPULATION IS GETTING TO WORK BY SUSTAINABLE MODES OF TRANSPORTATION. DENSITY AND TRANSIT RIDERSHIP SHOULD INCREASE DRAMATICALLY IN THE TOWN CENTRES OF RICHMOND AND COQUITLAM AND ALONG THE CANADA AND EVERGREEN LINE CORRIDORS.
THE DOWNTOWN POPULATION IS RAPIDLY GROWING, AND AS TRANSIT CAPACITY INCREASES, USE OF PERSONAL AUTOMOBILES IS IN STEADY DECLINE ON THE DOWNTOWN PENINSULA, IN FAVOUR OF WALKING AND CYCLING.
