What is revolutionary about the project is its mediation through open internet-based collaboration with the public, including students, professors and professionals. The open source nature of the project means that all the information we compile is open to the public. We have several hubs for online involvement in the project: a homepage, wiki, blog, mailing list and facebook group. Our webspaces are open to anyone who wishes to read, discuss, edit and otherwise participate in the project. Innovation is based in considering old problems from a new perspective. We do this by garnering the input of everyone- from architects and engineers to teachers and even yoga practitioners. We believe that everyone has something
valuable to add.
This entry is an ongoing project guided by a group of Vancouver students who intend to design and build a tiny home, viable as a laneway housing solution (both affordable and invisible) as described in Vancouver's Ecodensity Charter.
The central goal is to create a living body of research which will fuel the design and construction of a small human-centered home, grounded in public dialogue on modern lifestyles. The home is planned as an ecosystem/ habitat, which provides for the di_erent
strata of human need (physical, mental and emotional.) The home will be:
-a space for the user rather than their possessions
-a functioning ecosystem, cyclic in its input and output
-a positive in_uence on the user's habits and lifestyle, by
making better habits more convenient
In accordance with Vancouver's Ecodensity Charter, the house is planned on a small scale, well suited for laneway housing. The design is environmentally and financially low impact. In addition to limiting its draw on power and water grids, the open source design lowers the cost of building, because information is readily accessible through the online community. Harnessing solar, wind, water and human energy is only the beginning. We will continue to search, with help from our many technically savvy contributors, for innovative solutions to the design-problem of accommodating human need with respect to human
waste.
