A Civic Home that Marks Space and Time
We propose to create a civic home a place for ail generations; a model of efficiency and sustainability. A metaphor of connection and reconnection: of the north and south parts of the market; of the heritage, diversity and future of Toronto; of civic energy, pride and good governance; and of the impact of law and peaceful commerce. Rooted in the deep history of the site, it will be a vibrant building that celebrates Toronto's evolving cultural complexity.
Our concept for St. Lawrence Market North incorporates the memory of civic and personal lives that have infused the site ever since the first timber marketplace was built in 1803. Our concept captures the formal and functional essence of this past, white expressing the dynamic of the present, and embracing the challenges of our shared future.
The new building facilitates a dialogue between the format refinement of St. Lawrence Hall to the north and the robust industry of St. Lawrence Market to the south, and creates a dynamic new addition to the neighbourhood with a unique voice of its own.
