Description

The Marc Favreau Library will be located in an important transition zone served by multiple public services. The restructuring of the library block will make it a unique cultural, social and commercial hub.

The clown used his costume to communicate his emotions, distorting them to express, in turn, anger, sadness and joy. The weaving of the garment became a visual reference of the character, as well as an ideological referent of Sol's exploration of the places of tension and harmony in the social fabric, to reveal the multiplicity and richness of the human. The V motif of the plan recreates a weaving effect when superimposed and rotated on the two levels of the library. The inverted double V provides a simple and effective starting point for organizing the spaces, which appear to intersect.

Jury Report

The jury members raised the following main points concerning MA JLP's performance following the project presentations:

5.1 Ms Manon Assetin's presentation was well prepared, but unfortunately too detailed. The jury would have liked to be taken to the heart of the project and its essence.

5.2 The architectural approach is clear, and the inverted double "V" creates interesting but complex interior spaces. As are the explanations. The written concept is somewhat hermetic.

5.3 MA JLP presents a project that is sculpturally interesting but extremely complex in several respects.

5.4 The harmonization of the volumes with the 700 is the subject of mixed reactions. On the one hand, the integration is considered a success, while on the other, the palisade extending the 700 is seen as an obstacle to its enhancement.

5.5 The large forecourt is appreciated, and its protection by the volume of the upper floor is an asset in our northern climate.

5.6 The structural prowess required to create the protected, column-free forecourt is remarkable, but its necessity is questioned. The decision not to include a column is a costly one.

5.7 The interior integration of the 700 is well executed. The demolition of the 3rd-level floor is an ingenious solution to a space that was difficult to integrate. The structural concrete grid left in place becomes a sculptural element.

5.8 With regard to the interior fittings, there are a number of functional problems. There is no sense of the PFT being translated into the designed spaces. The modifications required are many and extensive. In addition to the numerous columns, the long, narrow spaces do not allow for flexibility. They also complicate the day-to-day work of staff.

5.9 Or from a technical point of view, the impression is that the community and cultural building has become a technological machine. It is oriented towards LEED, but sometimes to the detriment of users.

5.10 The jury was not convinced of the effectiveness of the vertical louver sunshades in controlling the sun's rays. In addition, the perception of these from the interior will result in the obstruction of the view by a multiplication of vertical elements.

5.11 Natural ventilation of a public building in an urban environment raises questions about user comfort, noise control and environmental pollution.

5.12 The green roof is a positive element of the project, but its accessibility is less so.
