URBAN VESSEL TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR NEW IMMIGRANTS AS A SOCIAL CONDENSER AND CONDUIT
"Immigrants' disadvantaged housing position affects their resettlement and long-term integration in Canada. Access to adequate, affordable housing establishes the circumstances and/or the opportunities to access otherformal and informal supports and networks. Without such housing people have no security, compromised health, jeopardized educational and employment opportunities and an impaired social andfamily life." (Danso and Grant, 2000; Kobayashi, Moore and Rosenburg, 1998)
The project proposes a transitional housing development for new immigrants to Vancouver that will house all the necessary services and supports they need to settle down in their new country. It seeks to address the need for new immigrants' transitional housings in Vancouver specifically and in major Canadian cities in general. It proposes an alternative mixed-used program by transforming the existing typology into a social condenser and conduit in the city. The re-configuration acknowledges the economic logics of residential and retail/commercial developments but avoids the isolated podium and tower block syndrome in Downtown Vancouver The hope is that the new typology and programmatic opportunities offered in this proposal will not only enrich the private worlds of the inhabitants but the public life of the city as well.
