Kaleidoscape seeks to reshape the cityscape. It answers the question, "How can Vancouver continue to grow without becoming a monotonous 'urban resort' over-run by pricy condos contained in monolithic podium towers?" Kaleidoscape is not merely a building; it is a new approach to real-estate. It caters to nomads, drifters, young families, and empty nesters alike. Kaleidoscape makes living earth-consciously not just easy, but unavoidable.
We live in a society that finds disposability convenient. Our throw-awayism is appalling. The only way to bring about change on the scale that is necessary to stop the destruction of our earth is to make an ecoefficient lifestyle convenient for the masses. Kaleidoscape strives to serve this purpose by incorporating many tried and true resource-saving features. The 3 story glass enclosed entry to the building, is lined by solar panels. Each Kaleidocondo is crowned with at least a partial roof garden, and beneath it all is a greywater irrigation and filtration system. The most unique aspect of the Kaleidoscape project is that each unit can actually be upcycled.
The building itself consists of the entry hall (which holds all utilities as well as stairways and elevators, and the building management office), three tiers of concourses with central stairways, and the corresponding three rings of plots. The plots do not vary in size or shape. The walls, doors, windows, and interior floors and ceilings are all owned by the resident. Standardized fittings allow utilities such as water and electricity to feed from the building's systems. The Kaleidocondos are assembled on site, and disassembled for reuse when the resident leaves. A wide range of finish selections make the units customizable. A family may wish to buy more than one plot in order to fulfill spatial needs, while studio units leave room for a garden on a single plot. At the end of its lifetime a unit can be sold back to the factory to be recycled, but ideally the units will travel with the owner Kaleidocondos can also be sold on location, or for parts for use in additions and for remodeling. This is upcycling.
