By transforming this urban space situated in the heart of the harbourfront
community, a new level of integration emerges creating a fresh perspective
on that which was already there. The goal was to convert from a direct path
from to one that allows for viewpoints within the park and the surrounding,
while also mirroring the existing geometry of the Don Valley Parkway ramp
situated within. This transformation offers a more communal space and one
that expands its potential usage and opportunity for other events. In keeping
with local materials to both the initial park and surrounding site, and through
it's form and function, this restored urban park is an ideal space for the city
and its people.
With it's circular shape the design for the park does not impose itself on the
user, or the city. Instead it's form can be adapted to a variety of functions. The
upper deck could easily be retrofitted with chairs and tables, or be left bare
to encourage users to use the green space to their advantage. The central
waterfall area could easily be converted into an outdoor ice rink, during cold
months when parks are not used as intensely; as well as being ideal to host
public events.
(From competitor's text)
KG: A sculpturally driven design that celebrates the curving form of the ramp itself.
PH: Celebrates the sculptural qualities of the vehicular infrastructure. As a green sculpture and path, it shows a lot of design acumen.
