Ryerson University must adapt to the ever-evolving urban Toronto neighborhood it inhabits, while forging a vibrant and living campus. Development at Ryerson must be an agent of an energetic and sustainable vertical campus for students, faculty, staff and the greater community. REZ is Ryerson University's next step in the success of this goal.
REZ is on-campus housing for the twenty first century that reflects the great residential colleges of the past. Yale and Cambridge University were studied as precent. Both schools have a network of carefully designed public, semi-private and limited access private courtyards on the campus. To access the residential colleges one must exit the street and enter buildings from the courtyards or "mixing pools" where a diverse group of users have chance encounters and foster unexpected relationships.
Like these precedents, our project envisions the development of strong communities and place-based relationships. Cracking the form open on a solar axis while tapering it to the north creates the space to design four distinct enclaves for community. These enclaves, in essence, create vertical streets by inviting the camaraderie, bustle, and promises of surprise and adventure into the building.
The most public of REZ's streets operates as a gate to the residence, the university and the neighborhood as it is open to the elements and the surrounding community. The buildings street edge will activate the corner through creating a new pedestrian street with a fabric of its own. Open commercial space, a market, a community outreach centre, administrative spaces and a dining hall face onto and can spill out into the pedestrian way. This creates a truly vibrant shortcut to and from the east. Above these spaces are four floors of residential units that look into this pedestrian street. These units could be specified as eight month leases, freeing them up as a hotel and convention space in the summer, with easy access to REZ's learning commons, lecture theatre, gym and breakout spaces on the next two stories above.
