Description

The Vinyl Space Frame

Vinyl's recyclable possibilities corresponds to the temporary nature of the program; the PanAm Award Pavilion for Toronto in 2015. The life of the vinyl starts at the local recycling plant, transforms into Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes for a space-frame pavilion, and returns to the recycling plant or piping industry. To further the sustainability, demolition from constructing the Pan American Village is piled up to create the base for an amphitheater and surrounding park. During the games, the space-frame and amphitheater create the pavilion. The space-frame is recycled after the games, leaving an outdoor stage much like the ancient Greek theaters.

The hill creates views to Toronto's skyline and the location of the site has access to the harbor. The typology is perfect for public space/park during the Games by visitors and after the Games by residents. This project looks both at the specifics of the event as well as the life and use afterwards.
