Branta's reach
Inspirationally driven by the Canadian goose, Branta's reach stands as a prominent icon on the Toronto waterfront. Dual stages allow for both lawn and bay performances, encouraging boater and pedestrian visits alike. The additional park space also allows for a re-emergence of green space to the harbour area.
In elevating the pavilion and lawn, we allow space below for both pavilion function as well as community and civic space. A large 70,000 s.f. Civic center located under the lawn will generate additional revenue to aid in facility and grounds maintenance while ensuring the pavilion's long life after the 2015 games.
To properly explore the opportunities of vinyl, Branta's reach utilizes the material as both an aesthetic for skins as well as a self-supporting structural component. In researching, vinyl may be moulded and produced to create varying levels of transparencies, textures, and flexibilities. Each "blade" of the pavilion is constructed with a series of vinyl casements that are bracketed and braced together. While the main weight of the blade is supported by an interior box truss, the outermost arms of the blades are self-supporting, allowing a certain level of flexibility to gently wave in the wind. Here the vinyl acts as aesthetic, structure, and shelter for encased lighting and solar power collection systems.
As vinyl celebrates long material life, the blade casements may be reused in transit shelters or other pedestrian coverings at a later time. Vinyl used in construction may be made mostly of recycled content and offers less emission and energy costs when rated against comparable products. While the lightweight vinyl would be delivered on site in appropriate color and ready for assembly, emissions are reduced and construction time is streamlined.
The expansive waterfront property offers great viewing potential and a creative solution to village access. The pedestrian underpass allows further use of vinyl in a creative sculptural expression. Once through the tunnel, a grand view is accessed from atop the plateau. From here, the processional path, running tracks, boater's docking cove, and earthworks inlet are presented to the viewer. Along the path, the pan American procession is celebrated by temporary flag presentations and enough space for spectators to gather and cheer on their national athletes.
