Description

Periscopes and Projected Landscapes

When you walk under the viaducts you can feel the old neighbourhood that was demolished to make way for the elevated street. The viaducts are a mental marker, announcing you have arrived into downtown Vancouver; enter or leaving East Van. The viaducts are massive canopies underneath. Seeing the viaducts as a design constraint; the question asked; what could this area become that would celebrate the space abandoned by mainstream society? The structural column relics of the viaducts are seen as industrial totems opportunities for urban-street art to occupy.

The idea submitted reacts and adapts to road conditions along Pacific Boulevard and the development and extension of the Creekside Park as a collage field of water and greenscape. This pattern seeks to connect the False Creek water edge to the boundary of Keifer Street. The zone between the Viaducts is seen as an opportunity to connect passive park area with a new urban plaza. The natural progression of this area has become an entertainment district; booked marked between two arenas, false creek and the Chinatown, Gastown.

Our idea tethers this lost Viaduct space from Chinatown, Gastown, and Strathcona to False Creek; through the insertion of a permanent Day and Night market. The Day and Night Market developed underground and at grade create the opportunity for community connection. Poking through at grade are a series of reflecting periscopes; visually connecting the activity on the ground. New bike and pedestrian bridges glide over Pacific Boulevard, adding shadow ink pattern on the new ground plane. These periscopes elevate above the viaducts presenting to the vehicle passengers a glimpse of the activity below. Vice versa - the periscope transforms the vehicles on the road above as a moving art canvas of vehicles in motion.

Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.
