Vancouverites take advantage of living, playing, relaxing, viewing and moving along the water. Huge new public spaces, greatly improved transportation, bike routes, a pedestrian galleria, and housing for 4,000 families complete that picture. We remove almost all the viaducts, leaving becomes an elevated park and view site, with sports beneath. Georgia and Dunsmuir come quickly to grade, their traffic spread across the city grid. Adjacent neighbourhoods are reunited.
Vancouver has taken advantage of the desire of people to live, play, relax, view and move along the water. Housing for 4,000 families, public spaces and transportation that replace the viaducts complete that picture.
-Hogan's View: We retain twin, 500' long viaduct sections as an elevated park and view platform, and a reminder of neighbourhoods lost, and saved. The West end waterfall is a reminder that this was once a waterway.
-Georgia and Dunsmuir come quickly to grade (maximum gradient 4.9%) at Pacific/Expo/Abbott, linking downtown with False Creek. Pacific and Expo are consolidated south of Livingstone Park to form an eight lane boulevard between Quebec and Abbott. The minimum clearance between these roads and the underside of existing structures is 4.6m, providing uninterrupted operation of the Skytrain. There's space for the future streetcar. The Georgia Steps bring pedestrians and bikes to the False Creek seawall.
-We provide direct truck access between downtown and the Flats, via an extension of Malkin Ave., bypassing residential neighbourhoods. Prior St. downgrades from a truck route to a neighbourhood collector.
-We reunite adjacent neighbourhoods with walks, paths, separated cycle tracks, streetcars, a 3,100' long park corridor from the Classical Chi¬nese Garden to Science World, and a restaurant row on Main connecting CityGate and Chinatown.
-New building types vary the standard Vancouver style. They are LEED Platinum and use district energy. Arcades and full-sidewalk eyebrows shelter pedestrians alongside an expanded Creekside Park.
-Nature returns to False Creek. We reveal our polluted past at the pump station, and showcase our clean future. A water feature appears to be part of False Creek, but is separate.
-All is practical and buildable.
