Description

Missing Links.

We propose to dismantle the viaducts and build above-grade tunnels that follow the same routes as the viaducts. Landscaping will be used to cover the tunnels and will connect False Creek to the Carrall Street Greenway. The landscaping will integrate pedestrian and bike lanes, while automobiles will be routed below grade. Residential development in the area will be situated in park-like landscapes with gardens along the water's edge.

While seeking to preserve the viaduct transportation link, we seek to create a green pedestrian link in the path to make Vancouver the world's most sustainable city. Vancouver's network of park lands is a near continuous loop of green spaces along the water's edge that geographically shape Vancouver. However, as Burrard Inlet and False Creek pinch the lands between Downtown and East Vancouver, the green spaces are disconnected. What is needed is a park-like urban landscape to fill the missing link between the green spaces that define Vancouver's perimeter, thereby closing the loop with a traversable connection between the two bodies of water.

This scheme proposes to dismantle the viaducts and build above-grade tunnels, without any below-grade excavation. The tunnels would generally follow along the same routes as the viaducts, but integrate at times with Expo Boulevard and Pacific Boulevard. Fill sol from building excavations around the city will be used to cover the tunnels, including the remnants of the viaducts after they are dismantled. The fill over the tunnels will gradually slope up from False Creek and level out to connect with Andy Livingston park, Dr. Sun Yet-Sen Garden and the Carrall Street Greenway. Landscaping atop the fill will integrate pedestrian pathways and bike lanes that traverse the lands from East to West and North to South, while automobiles will maintain the existing shortcut through this stretch of the city below the new park-like landscape. With the improved landscape, residential development in the area will be enhanced, and automobile access to the residential parkades can be achieved via the tunnels. Instead of seeing Vancouver's residential towers situated along a street grid, the new residences will be situated into a park-like landscape with gardens along the water's edge.
