SITE ORGANIZATION
The building is located on the site responding to the existing pathway system and greater site context in order to create a number of site zones: the central site area will become a large terrace/ outdoor area which serves the café/ multipurpose space by creating a big ?park room? defined by the building roof structure. This room opens up to the existing site vegetation at the eastern edge of the site. The western portion of the site is a small treed patio area relating to the adjacent picnic grounds. This area will provide sunny warm outdoor patio space for users. The northern part of the site will be a small formal semi- circular garden area terminated by an arched bench which focuses access and views to the adjacent wading pool.
SITE CIRCULATION
The main entry is located to the west, addressing the main western parking area. Direct building access to the washrooms is available to wading pool users. The southern pathway can access the main central patio and the concession, which will provide direct outdoor service to park users.
BUILDING PLAN
The building is organized as 2 distinct elements with small, white, brick clad structure housing the programmes utilisation facilities, including washrooms, concession, mechanical and janitorial spaces, and a large open ?park pavilion room? which opens up to the greater site creating the café/ multipurpose space. The brick clad structure has modest scale and form, reminiscent of the traditional Edmonton parks and existing Borden park buildings. The washroom area is located to provide direct access for wading pool users. This component of the pavilion could be opened independently of the rest of the building, as it has a separate entrance. The concession serves the café/ multipurpose room directly, and can have outdoor serving at the west patio if requested.
ELEVATIONS
The elevations are designed to accentuate 3 fundamental elements of the pavilion composition, the smaller brick clad structure, the larger glass/ wood structured "park room", and the overlapping y-roof made out of steel and wood.
