"The goal of my research is to consider the universe as an organization of regenerative principles.... This is the very basis of life, which refers to rebirth, reproduction, and, in the language of the architect, to notions of space, cycle, orbit, and cells."
Richard Buckminster Fuller, visionary architect.
The term renaissance is a word that refers both to a very auspicious time in the 19th century and also to an action of regeneration, resurrection, reconstruction. St. Paul's Church in Aylmer experienced a tragic episode with the fire that ravaged its historic monument. The opportunity to rebuild the church and redefine its role and activities in the community is here, we must seize this opportunity and build a place that corresponds to a vision, an aspiration that will resonate with the faithful parishioners of St-Paul's in Aylmer. Our concept for St. Paul's is based on the themes of rebirth, transformation, community outreach and the expressed needs of the client from the invitation to the ideas competition. We retained that the council of the parish wishes to preserve its identity link with the 120 year old church, and even to rebuild the church with the same template and the same exterior appearance.
The project must therefore aim to be:
- a place that meets cultural and community needs that are much broader than worship needs alone;
- a place that meets the needs of cost effectiveness, modernity, and ecology;
- a creative and innovative project;
- a project that enhances the original heritage elements;
- a project that can be delivered quickly.
We also researched recent projects and were inspired by St. Martin's Church in the Fields in the City of Westminster, which is transforming lives by feeding the poor, educating and training future employees, being a highly valued cultural venue, a testing ground for young instrumentalists and showcasing London's heritage.
Our architectural design takes into account the above-mentioned client requests. It is based on three autonomous entities that complement each other to form a whole:
- The chapel
- The community center
- The place of worship
The restoration of the entrance chapel responds to the client's identity and heritage needs. It is also part of the cultural and religious component through its museum, musical and ceremonial activities. The community center and the place of worship respond to the needs of innovation, modernity and ecology by their architectural expression and the choice of materials. Also many religious, community and artistic activities can easily take place and are desirable. In addition to meeting the client's basic needs, the project adds value to the immediate environment by proposing a site development that supports and complements the church's activities.
