PlayTime Square (a future memory)
On the Castle Downs Hill, growing up took a back seat to just being a kid.
During those long summer days, the hill was my home away from home, even though my brother claimed it to be "his". Racing to the top, he would announce to the heavens: "I'm the king of the castle!" My sister, unaware of his proclamations, would summersault carelessly down the hill, pausing only to count clouds or to rub at grass stains on her knees. For me, the hill was the perfect launching pad for my kite. I would release the Red Flyer into the warm summer wind and dream of one day being a pilot.
When winter came, we could hardly be held indoors long enough to zip our jackets before running off, dragging sleds and toboggans. The hill would be teeming with neighbourhood kids. The older ones building jumps and racing one another, the young slipping and sliding their way to the bottom. I remember trudging up that hill, deeply breathing in the crisp winter air, thinking that there was no other place I'd rather be.
Years have passed and as adults, we return to the hill often, now with my sister and her kids. I tell my nephews about those days when their mother would spin herself into a grassy mess. They laugh and run off to play while I lay down for a nap on the sunny slope.

There was much discussion about first and second place for this Park. The winner was deemed to be the most iconographic, but the strength of the second place winner is that it provides an attractive sense of place, with the potential to offer shelter and a venue for community events. The jury felt that it is perhaps a little too subtle for the site, when more visibility is called for. The usable roofs would be desirable but expensive to implement. The jury felt that with careful design and the simplification of building elements, it could be constructed within the budget.
