The Belvedere Pavilion
Castle Downs Park, located to the north of the city centre is a large suburban community park. Due to the relatively level topography, our strategy was to create a high point in the park - a belvedere - in the middle of the new park master plan. This Belvedere refers to the historical precedent of Castle Dunluce (origins of the Dunluce neighbor¬hood, Castle Downs) The castle was built on a high bluff. At Castle Downs, the belvedere forms a dual function - it's a high point from which people can look out onto the park, but at the same time large enough in scale to become a visual focus for the park - a visual landmark. From the Belvedere people are able to view the different sport events in the park, use it as an exercise space, or simply a place at which to sit and pass the time. Due to its scale and height, the Belvedere will become a place from which to orientate across the park. As a constructed object, the Belvedere is formed out of undulating poured-in place concrete and gabion walls. The Gabion walls are a unifying strategy to visually connect different parts of the park, and become the signature landscape architectural elements which extend out and re-occur throughout the park as way finding nodes where people would meet or gather. The gabions provide opportunity points for signage, seating, and park lighting.
The Castle Downs Belvedere is formed out of four elements;
Two Landscape Berms: The berms are 3.5m above the surrounding grade, and form a viewing point - each berm is directional and forms an amp hit heat re - like Landscape. The larger one faces the soccer fields to the north and smaller one faces the cricket fields to the south.
Undulating walls (Concrete and Gabion): The berms are enclosed by retaining structures formed out of two types of walls - one out of concrete, and the other made up of a gabion structure.
The Canopy: The canopy is a unifying structure that serves several purposes, to shade, to collect energy, and to collect rainwater.
The program requirements: The phased program if constructed beneath the two berms. The berms are scaled to the area requirements of the program.
